A DASH 2016
Condiment Container
brass, convex glass lens, and stained walnut
Inspired by the act of gift giving in Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale: The Porter's Son, A Dash is a lensed condiment container that magnifies the strength of a personal relationship through emphasizing the giver's knowledge of the receiver's individual taste.
On each stand is inscribed with tiny gold letters, a saying, that accompanies the contents of the container. The gifter fills in the container - like they are filling in the blanks to complete the sentence. To read the tiny letters, the receiver looks through the lensed case, rolling it from left to right, creating a subtle falling motion of the content.
the 3 sayings that are available:
Because you put this on everything.
(receiver's preference)
Because I think you might like it.
(Gifter's preference)
Because it made me think of you.
(open-ended)
The challenge was to design a universal gift that anyone could relate to and personalize. The object acts as a reflection of a relationship between two individuals - the idea that you know them so well, you know what the missing ingredient is to their perfect meal.
chilli flakes, turmeric, rosemary, parsley, poppy seeds
Because it made me think of you
The way your eyes light up,
the way that makes me feel.
Sleepy eyes and tea-stained cups,
the sunlight to my morning meal.
